Migrating to Connect Cloud: Posit’s Next Generation Publishing Platform

Shinyapps.io, RPubs, BookDown.org, and QuartoPub are coming together into one publishing platform: Posit Connect Cloud. In this session, Alex Chisholm walks through what Connect Cloud is and why we built it, the migration timeline for each existing service, and a first look at the new migration tool that moves shinyapps.io content over for you. Chris deMontmollin hosts a long Q&A covering seats, authentication, pricing, and what happens to content you already have published. What you will learn: How the free plan on Connect Cloud compares to the services you use today Every way to deploy: GitHub, RStudio push-button publishing, Positron and VS Code, rsconnect, and the Quarto CLI The migration timeline and read-only windows for each platform How shinyapps.io plans map to Connect Cloud plans, and how pricing is protected through 2029 How to use the migration tool to preview and finalize an app, with a permanent redirect from the old URL The most common migration failures and how to get past them Chapters 0:00 Welcome and introductions 2:29 What we will cover today 3:40 Why we built Connect Cloud 6:24 Connect Cloud from alpha to today, plus SOC 2 Type 1 7:33 How the free plan compares to the current services 8:27 One platform for both applications and documents 9:31 Every way to deploy to Connect Cloud 14:22 Individual and organization plans 17:59 Migration timeline for RPubs, QuartoPub, and BookDown.org 20:28 Bringing existing documents onto Connect Cloud 21:35 shinyapps.io: how the assisted migration works 23:25 Plan mapping and price protection through 2029 25:49 First look at the migration tool 27:58 Migrate, preview, and finalize an application 30:35 Pointing your IDE at Connect Cloud after you finalize 32:07 Common migration failures and how to fix them 35:58 Where to get help: docs and community forums 37:56 Q&A begins 38:22 What counts as a seat, and how viewers are priced 39:41 Multiple instances and horizontal scaling 40:09 How authentication works for end users, with a live demo 42:02 Sharing with external guests and clients 44:00 Subscriptions, credits, and avoiding extra costs 45:11 How long the URL redirects last 45:50 I linked my account but I am still on the free plan 47:39 Seats on a shared organizational billing account 48:35 What happens to authenticated users on a migrated app 49:27 What to do when a migration fails 50:56 Does my shinyapps.io account name transfer 51:33 Home pages and groups for different sets of users 52:37 Minimum number of seats 53:06 Who can run the migration, owner or any member 53:26 Customizing URLs and setting up a custom domain 54:45 Apps with hundreds of authenticating users 56:41 Wrap up and what happens next Resources Migration guide and FAQs: https://docs.posit.co/shinyapps.io/guide/migration/ Migration tool documentation: https://docs.posit.co/connect-cloud/user/shinyapps-migration.html Connect Cloud community forum: https://forum.posit.co/c/posit-professional-hosted/posit-connect-cloud/67 Learn more about Connect Cloud: https://posit.co/products/enterprise/connect-cloud Questions about your migration? Posit Platform Updates 2026 | Posit Connect

In this segment from our September 2026 Posit Platform Updates webinar, Senior Product Manager Kelly O’Briant walks through a demo of selected features from the July and September releases of Posit Connect. The featured demo is trusted publishing with GitHub Actions, which lets you deploy to Connect without storing an API key. Instead of keeping a long-lived key as a secret, the pipeline does a token exchange with Connect itself. Also covered: -Draft deployments: A GitHub Actions workflow that deploys your content to Connect as a draft rather than a bundle that gets immediately activated -Clearer audit trails: deployments trace back to the pipeline and source author instead of one person’s API key -Bundle viewer: a read-only file inspector for content bundles accessible from the Settings pane -Content rebuilds: trigger a full content rebuild for interactive content right from the UI -September release items (now available): the new Notification Center and the global role permission editor Trusted publishing is enabled by default starting with the July release and is available for Enhanced and Advanced Posit Connect licenses.
